1996

Well we rose from the rubble, took a hard look around the place
Through hot, oily air, saw despair cover every face
Time chose to stop and consider other avenues
Moving in directions to show how much we had to lose
So we fly through the future, all the way to 1996
Skidding to a stop and hoping there’s still time to fix
Broken bonds of trust, and all the duties we rejected
Hoping there’s still time to get our crooked course corrected
CHORUS:
We gave in to all the allure of division
We let all the charlatans make our decisions
We took all our knowledge and added lazy revisions
To avoid hard choices
We’ve been who we are since the world was young
And now that it seems that our songs are all sung
We feel the words on the tip of the tongue
But we lost our voices
So we fly through the future all the way to 1996…
Well the eaters at the diner say it’s never been like this before
Walls are falling down around us, nothing’s stable anymore
Then an old battered TV said it’s OK to draw the line
The oracle of TV said what’s yours is yours, what’s mine is mine
And above, all the scavengers then prepared to dine
CHORUS
And when we return, maybe what we’ve learned
Will have unmade our lives with its merciful knives
As the faces swirl through an undone world
Of souls that matter and lives that shatter and form again
Well the girl giving gifts said “I’m giving up and dropping out.
Gonna hit the road, gonna find out what I’m all about.”
And the boy with the guitar said “Solutions ain’t my currency.
The know-it-alls and Pollyannas never did a thing for me.”
And the scavengers watched from the lowest branch of the tree
CHORUS
Now we rise up against the ways of 1996

Saw his picture in a book that fell off of a coffee table
When I crammed a rock under a leg to try and make it stable
So I figured I would write this down as long as I’m still able…
Charming and sincere behind that weird moustache
Insulting everyone we hate while sweating loads of cash
He made us feel OK about larcenous belief
As though what he stole couldn’t make someone a thief
CHORUS:
But when we saw Marshall Northrup Overton’s electric sewage barge
We stayed plugged into his socket, even after fully charged
When Marshall Northrup Overton floated into town that day
All the saviors that were rallied couldn’t chase his words away
We got to where we are as slow lane tailgaters
Now we’re eating boring breaded food and whining at our waiters
So we were easy marks for his self-serving visit
But this isn’t really about him, now is it?
CHORUS
I think I heard he died, or otherwise expired
I would’ve learned the history, but thinking ‘bout it makes me tired
But listen hard enough, which isn’t hard at all
You still hear his bullshit echo off the wall
CHORUS
And when Marshall Northrup Overton should happen to return
I think we’ll see belatedly how much we failed to learn

I gave all my glory to a guy with a great sob story
And I’d gladly do it again
I gave all my money to a mud-spattered Easter Bunny
‘cause he looked like he needed a friend
Or at least some friendly token
To show that the world isn’t completely broken
CHORUS:
I’m zero to the power of zero
With an undefinable soul
Zero to the power of zero
And I won’t relinquish control
To anyone who’d define what makes me whole
I paid sky-high prices to a vendor buried by her vices
Even as she condemned all of mine
Then I took all my new goods and left them lying in the woods
And I walked away feeling just fine
Or at least entirely unconcerned
About where my ashes will someday be urned
CHORUS
There will always be pressure to renounce the dreams
You’ve carried around since birth
But you can torture logic ‘til it screams
And still not change the orbit of the Earth
CHORUS
Zero to the power of zero
Zero to the power of zero
Zero to the power of zero

Dream Logic
03:48
|
|||
I get up before the dawn
I go out and mow the lawn
My neighbors complain
But I need a way to stay sane
Putting my mind to rest
Why should it be such a test
When all I have to do
Is to live a life without you, and
Enter another place, enter a state of grace
Enter another place, enter a state of grace
CHORUS
Where I’m waiting for you, always waiting for you
Until the end of the world (where dream logic holds sway)
And there I clamber over lives in amber
Hoping against hope dream logic frees us up
To start life again
And there I saw a crowd of dancers, sobbing as they spun
Trying to forget about loves never quite begun
And ignoring escalators and stairways all about
Beckoning to be figured out, so to
Enter another place, enter a state of grace
Enter another place, enter a state of grace
CHORUS
Many a tear will fall
How many my dear are fallout
From you and me
And not something else entirely?
Some will point out the faults
And some will point at the fault lines
Under our feet
Where the future and the past meet, and
Enter another place, enter a state of grace
Enter another place, enter a state of grace
CHORUS
To start again
To start again

Changing Autumn Leaves
04:15
|
|||
Wandering off from the path we walk
I lose direction
But your color guides, and still we talk
With warm inflection
And on we go…
CHORUS:
With all the cold of the yet untold
Rolling down my sleeves
The red and gold make the days unfold
In ways this heart believes
You’re my changing Autumn leaves
Arriving now in a sun-soaked clearing
Seems accidental
But your color guides, with the sight appearing
Fundamental
And on we go…
CHORUS
The fall is confident and sure
Every time it starts
Leaves a feeling so secure
When Autumn, altered, finally departs

The Fabulous 464s Portland, Oregon
The Fabulous Four Six Fours record on a four track cassette deck in Portland, OR.
They make melody-
forward music with probably too many chords.
They sing tart little poems over those chords, and they put the vocal harmonies really high in the mix. And they call it quits after one or two takes.
Enjoy.
